Day 1: Dropping the Intellectual Battering Ram

Aug 29
3 min read

If you have spent any significant amount of time practicing traditional Zhan Zhuang (Standing the State) or internal martial arts, you have likely hit a wall of frustration. You memorize the forms, you constantly correct your posture, and you analyze the biomechanics, yet you still feel heavy and disconnected.

You were likely taught to micromanage your body using a mechanical checklist: tuck your pelvis, bend your knees, drop your shoulders, tighten your core. You end up pouring buckets of sweat, your shoulders aching as if they are tearing, trapped in a cycle of using isolated muscles to force your body into a shape.

We call this the Intellectual Battering Ram.

The intellectual battering ram mind is completely unequipped to manage the infinite, complex myofascial relationships required to maintain whole-body tensegrity. By trying to force your frame to work through sheer willpower, you become trapped in the "Mind Space"—a state where your consciousness is completely divorced from your physical reality. You hemorrhage energy trying to hold yourself upright against gravity using localized muscular tension, leading directly to fatigue and a collapsed frame.

The Lesson of Leaving the Boat Behind

My own teacher, Master Fung, once caught me dripping with sweat in sixty-degree weather, intensely running through my mental checklist of physical alignments. He laughed and asked why I was doing all of those things. When I told him it was because he told me to, he replied:

"You've already done that work, let it go. When you cross the river, leave the boat behind. You're trying to carry your boat up the mountain with you."

Master Fung was telling me to stop trying to control everything with my intellect. If you only use your mental model as a battering ram to smash through resistance, you will never unlock integrated strength.

Today, we leave the boat behind. We are transitioning from the chaotic Mindspace directly into the Nowspace

Practicing with the Video: The Inner Tree

In today’s teaching video, I am not just going to explain these concepts to you; I am going to ask you to stand up and do the work with me in real-time. We are going to bypass your analytical mind entirely using the Feelization Process.

When you follow along with the video, we will focus on three active steps:

Infographic of a human silhouette with tree roots and branches, arrows for inward/outward balance, and text on trilibrium architecture

1. The Setup (Arranging the Frame): We will begin by establishing the Natural Stance. We will use your previous foundational knowledge to get your body into the desired anatomical position, setting the baseline architecture without forcing it.

2. Inducing the Inner Tree:

I will guide you to imagine hugging a massive tree that is custom-fitted to you. But simply visualizing it is not enough; you must feel it. I will ask you to imagine your fingers digging into the bark, pulling the heavy wood against your chest, belly, and forehead, and squeezing it between your knees and feet. We are tricking your nervous system into responding as if this heavy physical load were actually real.

3. The Tension-Release Protocol (The Sigh):

This intense imagery will inevitably introduce tension into your body. Some of this tension is the necessary "wheat" of tensegrity, but much of it is the "chaff" of habituated muscular armor. In the video, I will lead you through our Tension-Release protocol. You will breathe into the feeling of the tree and exhale with a deep, audible sigh ("aaaaaahhhhhhhh"). This sigh is a physiological trigger that will teach your body to surrender its excess, fighting tension without losing the powerful feeling of embracing the tree.

Your Daily Prescription

You are the architect of your training. Approach today’s session with an innocent, curious mindset—like a child simply exploring what her body can do.

Watch and follow along with the interactive video, allowing my voice to guide your intent.

Immediately repeat the practice on your own in silence for a few minutes to hit the "save button" in your nervous system.

Perform one final solo repetition later this evening.

Leave your analytical mind at the door. Welcome to the Nowspace. Let's begin.
