Harnessing the Power of Rooting and Branching for Unshakeable Balance and Connection

Achieving balance in life often feels like a delicate dance between grounding ourselves and reaching for the stars. In the realm of physical movement and mindfulness, this balance can be understood through the concept of rooting and branching. This article will guide you through the process of uniting the feeling of sinking into the ground with the sensation of stretching away from it. By exploring this dynamic relationship, you can cultivate a deeper connection between your legs, feet, and arms, enhancing your overall sense of stability and presence.
Understanding Rooting and Branching

Rooting and branching are not merely separate actions; they are interdependent processes that support one another. Imagine a tree: while its branches stretch high into the sky, its roots mirror this reach deep into the soil. This duality allows the tree to sway gracefully with the wind, preventing it from breaking or falling. Similarly, in our own bodies, rooting into the ground provides the stability needed to branch out and engage with our surroundings.
Another powerful analogy is that of a sailboat, where the mast and keel work in harmony. The mast reaches upward to catch the wind, while the keel anchors the boat, ensuring balance and direction. Just as these elements are essential for the sailboat's movement, rooting and branching are crucial for our physical and emotional well-being.
The Practice of Rooting and Branching
To effectively practice rooting and branching, follow these steps:
Take a Natural Stance: Begin by standing comfortably, allowing your body to settle into a natural position. This stance will serve as your foundation.
Gather Yourself into the Nowspace: Focus on the present moment. Take a few deep breaths, letting go of distractions and centering your awareness.

Stack Your Frame: Spend a few minutes aligning your body. Imagine stacking your bones like building blocks, creating a strong and stable frame.
Choose a Shape: Remain in the Natural Stance or bring your arms into your preferred shape, maintaining the floating sensation. The classic 'tree hugging' aka 'bear hugging' posture is a common shape to use.
Apply a Feelization that promotes rooting. I recommend the 'Carry Water Feelization' as a starting point because it helps to enhance the feeling of aligning with the feeling of gravity we use in Gravity Stacking the frame.

Memory Bank the Carry Water Feeling. Imagining the heavy weight on your head and/or arms intensely enough and your frame will change 'as-if' what you imagined is actually happening. Remember this feeling as we will be recalling it without using the visualization part in the next steps.
Apply a Feelization the promotes branching. I recommend the 'Hanging by Threads' Feelization because it helps establish the sensation of something going up in opposition to the downward pull that is emphasized in Carry Water.

Memory Bank the Hanging by Threads Feeling. As the sensation of being suspended from above becomes more and more tangible with your practice, soak the feeling into your memory bank so we can call on it in next steps.
Practice Recall-Release with BOTH Feelizations. Using shapes and patterns of your choice recall the Carry Water Feeling or the Hanging by Threads Feeling. Within that feeling state use our release protocol of placing your awareness on a body segment or feeling of discomfort and using the breath, with an audible sigh, to intentional release the tension or discomfort.
Unify the Feelings: At first in sequence and then simultaneously recall the Carry Water and Hanging by Threads feeling state in fundamental shapes to forge them into a single sensation where 'the something going up' and the 'something going down' are both present and united within the feeling state. Let's call this the Rooting & Branching Feeling.

Apply the Rooting & Branching Feeling. In your personal practice seek to establish, amend and maintain the Rooting & Branching Feeling while standing the state, stepping and performing Fundamental Routes of Strength of your choosing. Use the Tension Release protocol liberally to locate and release unnecessary and or unwanted tension, discomfort and pain that may arise in your practice.

Recall the Rooting & Branching Feeling in your daily life. Recall the feeling of Rooting & Branching in you daily activities. Instead of slumping in your office chair, plant your feet, extend up and find the sweet spot where sitting upright is effortless. Challenge yourself to infuse you casual walking with the Rooting & Branching Feeling to find more spring and fluidity in your gate. What else can you apply the feeling too? What differences do you notice?

Incorporating the principles of rooting and branching into your daily practice can lead to unshakeable balance and connection. By understanding the interdependence of these two aspects, you can cultivate a deeper awareness of your body and its relationship with the earth.
As you practice rooting and branching, remember that this journey is not just about physical stability; it is also about emotional resilience and mindfulness. Embrace the dynamic relationship between sinking and stretching, and allow it to transform your experience of movement and presence.

Seeking the Trilibrium

Establishing a strong Rooting & Branching Feeling is the second aspect of the Trilibrium of balance we are seeking through this method. Sequentially we start with Gravity Stacking to align our frame with gravity, which sets up the next step of uniting the Rooting & Branching feeling.
This feeling will feed into the next aspect which is Uniting Open and Close which is itself built on being aligned with gravity (Gravity Stacking) and an extrapolation of Rooting & Branching to achieve a sensation of uniting the expansive and contractive capacities of the frame.
